Microsoft is preparing an important update for the Photos application in Windows 11, which will add artificial intelligence to automatically sort images. For now, the new feature is only available to members of the Windows Insider program, but it will be available to all users in the future.
How AI works in Photos
The new system uses computer vision algorithms to categorize images based on their content. Once analyzed, photos will be automatically organized into separate folders - for example:
- screenshots,
- checks and receipts,
- documents,
- notes and other categories.
Even if the text in the image is not in English, the AI will be able to identify its type and correctly categorize the file.
Once sorted, the categories will be displayed on the left navigation bar, making it easier to find and organize media files.
Feature Availability
AI photo sorting will only be available only on Copilot+ PCs, as they have the processing power needed to process images locally.
The feature appears in the version of the Photos app 2025.11090.25001.0 and later. It's currently being tested in Windows Insider, with an official release for all Windows 11 users expected later.
"The update adds a powerful new feature to Copilot+ PC that uses AI to sort photos into categories for easier searching This feature saves time, gets rid of clutter, and makes it easier to navigate your photo library."
