Wednesday's Storms & Thursday's Forecast: Stay Weather Aware

Scattered Showers, Flash Floods, and a Brief Tornado Warning Hit the Region

A significant weather event impacted the North Central West of North Carolina/West Virginia (NCWV) region on Wednesday, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms that intensified into widespread rainfall. The storms prompted a Tornado Warning and Flash Flood Warnings, impacting several counties. While the severe weather has subsided, isolated rain and thunderstorms are expected to return on Thursday.

  • Heavy Rainfall: Rainfall totals ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 inches, with some areas south of US-50 receiving up to 3.5 inches, leading to flash flooding.
  • Tornado Warning: A brief Tornado Warning was issued near the tri-county border of Ritchie, Doddridge, and Gilmer counties. No confirmed tornadoes have been reported.
  • Flash Flood Warnings: Three separate Flash Flood Warnings were issued due to the heavy rainfall.
  • Thursday's Outlook: Expect isolated showers and thunderstorms to begin around noon and continue through the evening. Localized flooding remains a possibility.
  • Warm Temperatures: Thursday will see warmer temperatures, with highs in the mid-80s in the lowlands and low 80s in the valleys.

The intense storm system on Wednesday caused considerable disruption, with reports of flooded roads and downed trees. The Flash Flood Warnings were particularly impactful, with southern Lewis County and southwestern Upshur County experiencing the highest rainfall amounts. While the Tornado Warning was a serious concern, the fact that no confirmed tornadoes touched down is a relief.

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, the region is expected to remain unsettled. A combination of warm, humid conditions, approaching frontal boundaries, and potential low-pressure systems will keep the chances of rain high. Temperatures will remain seasonal, with highs ranging from the mid-80s to low 90s in the lowlands. Stay tuned for further updates as the weather situation evolves.
