Ayr United Gets Green Light for Alcohol Sales Pilot

Limited Alcohol Sales to be Trialed at Premier Sports Cup Games

Ayr United fans will soon have the opportunity to purchase alcohol at select home games as part of a pilot scheme approved by South Ayrshire Council. The William Hill Championship club has been granted the necessary licenses to allow a small group of supporters to enjoy a pre-game pint and more.

  • Limited Capacity: The pilot will accommodate a maximum of 66 supporters aged 18 and over per game.
  • Included Drinks: Tickets priced at £35 include up to four pints before the match and an additional pint at half-time.
  • Test Events: The initial tests will be held during the Premier Sports Cup games against Arbroath on July 19th and Forfar on July 22nd, specifically within the existing disability section of the stadium.
  • No Pitch View: In accordance with current regulations, fans in the bar area will not be able to view the pitch.
  • Drink Selection: The only alcoholic beverage offered will be Moretti lager, with soft drink alternatives also available.

This initiative marks a significant step towards potentially easing restrictions on alcohol consumption at Scottish football matches, which have been in place since 1981 following a period of unrest. Sport Minister Maree Todd emphasized that the decision to grant the licenses rests with local authorities and Police Scotland, ensuring compliance with existing laws.

The club expressed optimism that this pilot will enhance the matchday experience for fans. They are committed to providing updates as the pilot progresses. This is a valuable opportunity to assess the feasibility of allowing alcohol sales in a controlled environment, while prioritizing the safety and well-being of all attendees. The success of this pilot could pave the way for wider changes in stadium regulations.
