Roskomnadzor will restrict WhatsApp and Telegram calls in Russia from September 2025

Roskomnadzor issued a press release where it confirmed the fact of restriction of calls in messengers WhatsApp and Telegram.

According to the agency, both platforms are massively used for fraud, extortion of money and involvement of citizens in terrorist activities.

"Please be informed that in order to counteract criminals, measures are being taken to partially restrict calls in these foreign messengers in accordance with law enforcement materials. No other restrictions are imposed on their functionality. Repeated requests to take countermeasures have been ignored by the owners of the messengers."

Over the past few weeks, rumors about the upcoming blocking of calls in popular messengers have been actively spreading in the network. Users from different regions of Russia reported interruptions and problems with calls.
