The Boring Company tests Tesla Full Self-Driving autopilot in Las Vegas tunnels

Ilon Musk's The Boring Company has begun testing the Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system in transportation tunnels near Las Vegas. This was announced by Steve Hill, General Director of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. According to him, the tests have been underway for several months, but the full implementation of autonomous technology remains a matter of the future.

🤖 What's being tested and how it works

The tests take place within the Vegas Loop, an underground transportation network connecting the Convention Center of Las Vegas to major hotels on the Strip. The system has been in operation for more than four years, but transportation is currently served by Tesla cars with observer drivers on board.

⚠️ Why is autopilot still not fully autonomous?

Despite the simplicity of the routes - one-way traffic, no intersections and no outside traffic - Full Self-Driving (FSD) requires constant human control. The main challenges:

  • Different colored lighting in tunnels;
  • Half-polished walls that reflect light and interfere with orientation;
  • Difficulty in identifying Points of embarkation and disembarkation of passengers**.

📍 How does this relate to the rest of Tesla's projects?

Tesla has previously launched limited robotaxi services in Austin and San Francisco, but even in the more predictable tunnel environments, full autonomy has yet to be achieved.

🔍 Conclusion

The Boring Company's Las Vegas project is an important step towards autonomous transportation in megacities. However, current tests confirm that even in a perfectly controlled environment, Tesla's autopilot technology is still far from fully independent. The future lies in robotaxis, but right now it's still a trial and error phase.
