Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen shared screenshots of his correspondence with ChatGPT, during which they played a game of chess. Carlsen defeated ChatGPT "dry", removing all of his opponent's pieces and not losing any of his own.
- In the game, Carlsen estimated the level of ChatGPT to be 1800-2000 points according to FIDE or USCF.
- The neural network seriously underestimated the grandmaster, who is ranked number one in the world with a rating of 2839 points.
- Carlsen's game was stable and strong, which is not typical for ChatGPT.
Carlsen admitted that he only played with ChatGPT because he got bored on the flight. He saw the match as entertainment rather than a serious game. The chess community took the assessment of Carlsen's level of play with humor.
Recall that ChatGPT and other AI chatbots are not famous for their level of chess play. For example, the Atari Chess engine for the Atari 2600 console (1977) recently defeated ChatGPT and Copilot without any problems.
As a result of this game, it becomes obvious that even the strongest neural networks are far from being as smart at chess as they seem at first glance.
